Fish Disaster

We've had a big attack of some kind that has killed many of our fish in the 55 gallon tank.  It started as a simple ich infection, but then, went nuts, and now it it unlike anything I've read about.  The fish's fins are not exactly falling off, but the membrane between the spines of the fins is deteriorating.  It looks like finrot, but it isn't, and it is not responding to any of the traditional finrot medications.
We purchased a new 5 gallon tank setup, and moved the babies into that.  We then cleared the 55 gallon tank, and moved the sick fish into the 10 gallon tank.  The plants were removed, and are now in the 2.5 gallon tank.
I hope the latest batch of medications, and the smaller tank, will help get rid of whatever is attacking the fish.
